This morning, I hooked up our flatbed trailer to go pick up some rye. Walking back to the truck I noticed the difference between our neighbor's field, pictured on the left, and our field. His was a lot easier to walk through. His field with low stubble was showing dirt whereas ours still held snow. His was fallowed last summer, exposed to sun and wind. Without living roots in the ground or leaves to capture carbon and give shade, the soil life suffers. Then the field was sprayed with an herbicide to kill whatever life had persisted. It's the standard practice in dryland farming. … Whereas continuous cropping helps to maintain healthy soil biology. That's what dryland farmer Pat Field at Gen 5, Inc. in Pendroy does, and that's where our spelt is grown.
